Join Dr. Mary-Louise Timmermans, Damon Wells Professor of Earth and Planetary Sciences at Yale University, for a presentation about how the Arctic Ocean's Beaufort Gyre is a dominant feature of the Arctic system, a prominent indicator of climate change, and possibly a control factor for high-latitude climate.
Professor Chi-Wang Shu from Brown University will be the speaker in this year’s first Applied and Computational Mathematics Distinguished Lecture. Prof. Shu will give the Distinguished Lecture on Wednesday September 21, 11:30-12:30, in MC 5501, followed by a reception. Everyone is cordially invited!
Nathaniel Stevens from the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science and Mohammad Kohandel from the Department of Applied Mathematics have been named winners of this year’s Awards for Distinction in Teaching from the Faculty of Mathematics.
Applied Mathematics professor Sivabal Sivaloganathan has been elected Fellow of the Society for Mathematical Biology (SMB) and will be honoured in the 2023 Annual Meeting. The Society’s Fellows Program was launched in 2017 and aims to name up to two fellows every two years in recognition of their contributions to mathematical biology.
Anita Layton, a professor at the Department of Applied Mathematics, has been recognized as one of six members of the Canadian Mathematical Society inducted into the 2022 Class of Fellows. The Fellowship honours mathematicians who have made outstanding contributions to the profession through research or teaching as well as service to Canada’s mathematical community.
Jun Liu, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics, was named among this year’s Canada Research Chairs from the Government of Canada.
Liu’s research focuses on control and dynamical systems, with a specific interest in the control of robotics and machinery.
Climate change is making wild weather increasingly common—and raising the stakes for weather forecasters.
Researchers in the Department of Applied Mathematics are using computer-simulated drug trials to provide clinicians with insights on a promising cancer treatment.
The drug, called metformin, has traditionally been prescribed for diabetes but has been used in clinical settings as a cancer treatment in recent years.
Professor Marek Stastna of the Department of Applied Mathematics begins an appointment as the new Associate Dean, Computing at the Faculty of Mathematics in January 2022.
