On September 20, Applied Math professors Hans De Sterck and Anita Layton hosted the first Math + X Inter-Faculty Research Workshop.
Andrew Grace, who was a PhD student at the Department of Applied Mathematics and defended his PhD thesis in July 2022, was awarded the Tertia M. Hughes Memorial Graduate Student Prize of the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society for his thesis. The award, which recognizes contributions of special merit in meteorology or oceanography, was presented in absentia at the 2023 annual meeting of the Society in St. John’s.
Avneet Kaur was selected as 2nd place for the best student paper in a contributed session at the Applied Mathematics, Modeling and Computational Science (AMMCS) 2023 conference at Wilfrid Laurier University, Waterloo. The title of the presentation was “Comparison of extended Kalman filter and recurrent neural networks for state estimation.”

Professor Sue Ann Campbell began her term as president of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematical Society/ Société Canadienne de Mathématiques Appliquée et Industrielle (CAIMS/SCMAI) in June 2023. She has served as president-elect since 2021.

The Department of Applied Mathematics recognized excellence in graduate students with eight Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards and a Doctoral Award, which will be presented on 14 July 2023.
Professor Siv Sivaloganathan of the Department of Applied Mathematics was awarded the 2023 CAIMS-Fields Industrial Mathematics Prize at the annual meeting of the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematical Society/ Société Canadienne de Mathématiques Appliquée et Industrielle (CAIMS/SCMAI) in June 2023. The prize recognizes exceptional research in any area of industrial mathematics conducted in Canada. Professor Sivaloganathan is the 12th recipient of the prize, which was first awarded in 2010.
Professor Hans De Sterck began his appointment as Chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics on 1 July 2023.
