Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Robert Jonsson won the Faculty of Mathematics 3-minute thesis competition held on March 1, 2013, with his talk titled "Relativistic Quantum Information". Robert will be one of two representatives of the Faculty at the University-wide competition, to be held on March 27, 2013.

Applied Mathematics PhD candidate Nancy Soontiens was one of the University of Waterloo students chosen to ask a question of astronaut Chris Hadfield during a live downlink between the International Space Station and the university on Friday, February 15. Nancy asked for advice for aspiring astronauts. Commander Hadfield's response: get an advanced degree, be in good physical condition and show that you have the ability to make good decisions when consequences matter.
