Quantum Benchmark, a Kitchener-based company providing software solutions for error suppression and performance validation in quantum computing hardware, was acquired by Keysight Technologies in May 2021. Quantum Benchmark was founded by Applied Mathematics professor Joseph Emerson.

The Department of Applied Mathematics was pleased to present the Outstanding Doctoral Student Award, Best Research Paper Awards, and Outstanding Teaching Assistant Awards on Thursday, 17th June 2021.

Professor Sue Ann Campbell of the Applied Mathematics department has been appointed a University Research Chair (URC) in recognition of her active role and accomplishments as a researcher, educator, and contributor in the fields of mathematical biology and neuroscience.

Congratulations to Professors Bin Ma and Sue Ann Campbell on their appointments as University Research Chairs at the University of Waterloo. Both researchers are highly distinguished and have made significant, valuable contributions in their respective fields.

“Imagine being out on a lake on a windy day and you’re getting pushed around by waves,” says Marek Stastna, an oceanographer and professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics. “What you may not realize is that in the interior of the ocean, there are waves one hundred times that size. My passion is to create mathematical models of that type of movement.”

Professor Kirsten Morris has been elected by the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics (SIAM) as one of the 2021 Class of SIAM Fellows. She was nominated in recognition of her "contributions to modeling, approximation, and control design for distributed parameter systems."

“Math and medicine are like the two solitudes,” reflected Professor Siv Sivaloganathan, chair of the Department of Applied Mathematics. “They represent two separate cultures and ways of thinking.” When the two combine into mathematical medicine, the results are nothing short of astonishing.

Anita Layton (Canada 150 Research Chair in Mathematical Biology and Medicine, Professor of Applied Mathematics, Computer Science, Pharmacy, and Biology) has been announced as the recipient of the 2021 Krieger-Nelson Prize.

Congratulations to Wilten Nicola! Wilten, a recent PhD from Applied Math (supervised by Sue Ann Campbell) has been awarded a Tier 2 Canada Research Chair, at the University of Calgary.
