  • principal (spelled “p-a-l”): The head of a school. 

principle (spelled “p-l-e”): A matter of belief or ethics; a law of science.

  • Examples: Fong was the principal investigator. A man of high moral principle. The uncertainty principle.

prerequisite

  • Prerequisite is a necessary condition (no hyphen) and the short form. Prereq is acceptable in course descriptions. 

professor emeritus (singular), professors emeriti (plural)
Refers to a retired faculty who retain academic rank.
