The Department of Chemical Engineering is a vibrant center of collaborative research addressing some of the most pressing challenges in energy and materials. Our faculty members are engaged in a diverse array of research in areas such as machine learning and process systems engineering, CO2 capture and conversion, polymer engineering, renewable energy, synthetic biology, environmental remediation, and materials science that push the boundaries of innovation.

Prof Tizazu Mekonnen chairs Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology PhD Project
Chemical Engineering Professor Tizazu Mekonnen has been named Inaugural Director of the Indigenous and Black Engineering and Technology (IBET) PhD Project. This new partnership, which includes the University of Waterloo and five other Ontario universities, aims to diversify academia and Canadian technology industries by increasing the number of Indigenous and Black Canadians pursuing engineering and technology degrees at universities across Ontario.
ChE department mourns death of second-year student
With deep sadness, we announce the death of second-year Chemical Engineering student Mihir Rodrigues, who passed away from a heart-related issue on December 29th, 2020, while he was at home in India.
ChE Buddy Program helps first-year students find success
