The co-op advantage

What is co-op?

Co-operative education is an educational model that formally integrates academic studies with relevant work experience. When you complete your degree, you will have the same number of academic terms as a student in a regular (non-co-op) program, plus up to 2 years of work experience.

Co-op quick facts

  • Benefit from North America’s most established co-op program
  • 93% employment rate in the first work term among Computing and Financial Management (CFM) students who began Fall 2015
  • 100% employment rate in subsequent work terms among CFM students
  • Earn between $11.00 and $30.00 ($19.81 on average) per hour during your first work term
  • Earn from $55,000 to $120,000 over 6 work terms (24 months of co-op)

Study/work term sequence

Computing and Financial Management is co-op only. This means that 100% of CFM students are in co-op and will participate in alternating study terms and work terms. Each academic and work term is approximately 4 months in length and will follow this sequence:

Year Term Work or Study
1 Fall (1A) Study
Winter (1B) Study
Spring Work
2 Fall (2A) Study
Winter Work
Spring (2B) Study
3 Fall Work
Winter (3A) Study
Spring Work
4 Fall (3B) Study
Winter  Work
Spring (4A) Study
5 Fall  Work
Winter (4B) Study

Study terms: The CFM program consists of 40 academic courses. CFM students can complete the course requirements in 8 study terms by successfully passing 5 courses per term.

Work terms: The CFM program includes 6 work terms, which means 6 opportunities for students to gain relevant, varied, and paid work experiences by the time they graduate. CFM students must complete a minimum of 5 work terms and have the option to replace 1 of 6 work terms with an additional study term or an international exchange.

Finding a co-op job

During the study term prior to a scheduled work term, CFM students participate in the job search process. This process includes:

  • Creating and/or updating a resume
  • Applying for jobs
  • Interviewing
  • Accepting an offer of employment

Co-op students are not "placed" in jobs. Like the real world, Waterloo students are responsible for making an impression in order to receive a job offer. So much depends on the effort put into the job search process, employable skills, where students are willing to work, the availability of jobs in the field of interest, and the economy in general.

Many factors such as the economy are beyond an individual student’s control but factors such as academic success and interview skills are entirely under each student’s control. CFM students who are unable to find employment are typically having difficulty in one or both of these areas.

Although the ultimate responsibility to land a job is the student’s, there are a variety of supports and resources on campus to help students find a co-op job. Drawing on the strengths of two schools and Waterloo's expertise in co-operative education is a big help!

At work

Work terms are a minimum of 12 weeks in length. During that time, students work full time; typically 35 to 40 hours per week, and are expected to perform with the same level of professionalism and dedication as other full-time employees. Many students receive training or orientation during the first week on the job. This training helps to familiarize students with the company, the facilities, fellow employees and the positions for which they are hired.

At the end of each work term, your performance will be assessed by your employer, in the form of an evaluation, and by you, in the form of a work term report. A total of 4 successful work term reports are required to graduate with a Bachelor of Computing and Financial Management.

Sample co-op jobs

Since CFM students belong to two schools, two faculties, and develop valuable insights regarding how to best approach new assignments, they are qualified to apply for jobs in computer science, finance, or both. This increases their chances of securing potential job opportunities in Canada and around the world.
