According to our co-op roles and responsibilities, you must receive some form of compensation for your co-op work terms in order to receive credit. This compensation varies widely depending on your employer, your program of study, your work term level or your overall work experience.

We record and publish average earnings information annually in the charts below for students and employers to use as a reference. Please note that employers are not required to follow these rates of pay, but can consult them when determining your salary.

*All Canadian work term data is reported in Canadian Dollars. While students from all faculties complete co-op work terms in the United States, only those with a sufficient sample size have been reported. Please note that 10 percent of all co-op work terms in 2018 were located in the United States.

Unpaid/underpaid work terms

In some situations, unpaid co-op jobs will be approved for work term credit, as long as the job conforms to the guidelines for unpaid/underpaid work terms.

Note: This data is provided for informational purposes only. Co-operative and Experiential Education at UWaterloo does not establish or recommend pay level for co-op students, and this information should only be used as a guideline to be reconciled with the known market conditions for the position. Please exercise diligence in applying this information to your specific situation.
