Current graduate students

With the pandemic going on, there is lots of talk about CERB, the benefit that was created as an emergency response. Professor Stephanie Lluis wrote a memo for the C.D. Howe Institute titled, "Lessons from Employment Insurance for the CERB" where she discusses how employment insurance can provide guidance for the CERB. 

The CRDCN (Canadian Research Data Centre Network) hosted a series of webinars on a variety of topics featuring panelists who are experts in those areas. In a webinar titled, "Income and Employment", Professor Mikal Skuterud was one of the panelists. 

Yichun Huang, a PhD student in Economics, competed in the Arts 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition earlier this term. Yichun had three minutes to explain her thesis with one static slide.

Congratulations to Andrés Arcila-Vasquez who successfully defended his PhD thesis titled, ‘Three Essays in Policy Evaluation’. His supervisor was Ana Ferrer.

Congratulations to Annie (Yazhuo) Pan for successfully defending her thesis titled, "Essays in Wealth Effect, Family Structure, and Female Labour Supply". Her supervisors were Ana Ferrer and Stéphanie Lluis. We wish Annie all the best on her next steps! 

Congratulations to PhD student Renfang Tian who successfully defended her PhD! Her thesis is titled, “On Functional Data Analysis: Methodologies and Applications”. Her supervisor was Professor Tao Chen. The department is incredibly proud of your hard work. Renfang will be an Assistant Professor (Tenure Track) at King's University College at Western University. Excellent job, Renfang!

Current MA student Chuanmo Jin has written an opinion piece called, "Single-use plastics: Do we need to ban them?". This piece originated from an ECON 606 assignment and is just a taste of the potential of our MA students. 

John Baker, an Economics PhD student, was the recipient of one of the grants from the Bank of Canada for their PIVOT program. John usedsearch-query data to process the impact of policy measures on household spending in real-time. J-P Lam helped supervise some of his work.

Congratulations to our 2019 graduates!

Ramsha Jaweed, Econ MA student, wins second prize in the Canadian Research Data Centre Network (CRDCN) Policy Challenge Competition. Competitors came from UBC, Calgary, Western, McMaster, Toronto, and Laval. The competition is an opportunity for students to use their research results to inform real-world Canadian policy-making and propose innovative policy solutions.
