Health Hub - Spring 2025

I’d like to start by expressing a heartfelt THANK YOU to all our donors. We are fortunate to have such dedicated and loyal supporters, which was exemplified during our recent Giving Day event on May 15. The final amount raised is still being counted, but we’re excited to share that, through your generosity, we raised more than $14,000 before the matching funds!

Your support of the Faculty of Health and the University of Waterloo allows us to invest in our students and programming while also giving us the tools we need to tackle the big problems ahead of us..With an aging population and a strained health-care system, the need for effective prevention strategies is urgent.

That is why we are launching a Healthy Waterloo Initiative, which will turn the University of Waterloo campus into a 'living lab.' We are going to harness our extensive expertise to explore how to measure, implement and sustain real-world solutions that transform health and well-being, using people, AI, technology, and, of course, preventive health strategies. We have an ambitious goal for Healthy Waterloo to be scalable, harnessing our campus community to first create Canada’s Healthiest Campus, then roll it out to create the healthiest region, province and beyond.

Best of all, we will launch Healthy Waterloo by bringing back the Fun Run! Save the date: Saturday, September 20. Registration opens in June so stay tuned for more information as the planning unfolds.

Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome Leanne Varey as the new Development Officer on the Health Advancement Team. Leanne comes to us from the Department of Kinesiology and Health Sciences (if her name seems familiar) and she will be working on sponsorships, connecting with alumni and donors and special programming.

Collaboration with our Health community is important to us. Please contact either myself or Leanne if you have ideas, suggestions or would like to learn more. In the meantime, please enjoy reading about various initiatives from our community members.

Thank you again for your tremendous support this past Giving Day and every day! Together, we can create a healthier world for all.

Andrea Carthew.
