One incoming student in the Faculty of Mathematics is beginning their semesters with a bit of extra money in his pockets.

First-year student Jason Amri won a Schulich Leader Scholarship, the largest STEM scholarship in Canada and valued at $80,000 or $100,000 for science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) programs.

The 31^st International Olympiad in Informatics Canadian team returned home from Baku, Azerbaijan with three medals, and Zixiang (Peter) Zhou ranked third in the world out of 327 competitors.

“Placing 3^rd in the world is awesome,” said Associate Dean, Undergraduate Admissions and Outreach Troy Vasiga, and leader of the team. “Peter participated in the Japanese Olympiad, Central European Olympiad, and Russian and Chinese contests to prepare. It obviously paid off.”

Three researchers in the Faculty of Mathematics received funding valued over $350,000 through the John R. Evans Leaders Fund (JELF). On Monday, August 12, the Honourable Kirsty Duncan, Minister of Science and Sport, announced the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) funding for infrastructure.

The University of Waterloo, which is among the top universities in the world for actuarial science and number one in co-operative learning, has combined these two things to help build a stronger insurance and pension industry in Indonesia.

Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Raouf Boutaba, his graduate students and international colleagues have received two best paper awards at NetSoft 2019, the 5^th IEEE International Conference on Network Softwarization.

A Google Faculty Research Award propels quantum machine learning forward.

The Physics of Information lab, led by Professor Achim Kempf, was awarded one of the 2018 Google Faculty Research Awards. Kempf’s lab focuses on the physics of information, a wide research field that ranges from general relativity and quantum theory to information theory and artificial intelligence (AI).
