Congratulations to the three students nominated for the Jessie W.H.

Three graduating PhD students in the Faculty of Mathematics were awarded the inaugural Mathematics Doctoral Prizes. Hanmeng (Harmony) Zhan from Combinatorics and Optimization placed first, and Boyu Li and Ruizhang Jin from Pure Mathematics won second and third places respectively.

The University Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) Global Research Rankings of Actuarial Science and Risk Management and Insurance has ranked the University of Waterloo the number one non-business, degree-granting school worldwide. Waterloo was ranked first in both the number of papers in the leading risk and insurance journal, as well as in the top four leading actuarial journals.

Out of 100 students competing at the Data Open Championship, 11 of them were from the University of Waterloo, making it the institution with the largest number of competitors to compete in the championship.

Professors Kate Larson, Matthew Kennedy, and N. Sri Namachchivaya have all been appointed as University Research Chair in recognition of their outstanding research contributions. The Faculty of Mathematics recognizes six graduate students for their outstanding research papers. Andrew Giuliani in the Department of Applied Mathematics, Stefan Sremac in the Department of Combinatorics and Optimization, Ruizhang Jin in the Department of Pure Mathematics, Rui Qiao in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Science, and Nik Unger and Ahmed Alquraan from the David R.

PhD candidate Priyank Jaini is one of 10 recipients nationally to receive a Borealis AI 2019 Graduate Fellowship.

The Waterloo team placed 10^th at the recent William Lowell Putnam Mathematics Competition. The team members were Albert Gevorgyan, Anzo Teh, and Fengyang Wang. Both Gevorgyan and Wang are also Michael and Ophelia Olympiad Scholarship winners.

University Professor M. Tamer Özsu has received the 2018 Lifetime Achievement Award in Computer Science from CS-Can/Info-Can. Conferred annually since 2014, these prestigious national awards recognize faculty members in departments, schools and faculties of computer science who have made outstanding and sustained achievement in research, teaching and service.
