On October 1, the Faculty of Mathematics welcomed its 2026 Alumni Award winners back to campus for a day of celebration, culminating in a panel discussion with current students. The award recipients talked about their time at Waterloo, career paths and lessons learned along the way.

Most people's blood pressure falls by 10 to 20 per cent while they sleep, giving the heart and blood vessels a chance to recover. But for some people, that nighttime dip never happens. Known as "non-dippers," these individuals face a higher risk of heart disease, stroke, kidney disease and premature death.

Paul Dirksen, a pioneer computer scientist at the University of Waterloo, passed away on April 8, 2023. He was 83. Paul was a vital part of UW computing history. He was one of the developers of the WATFOR and WATFIV compilers for the IBM 360 mainframe system in the late 1960s. While a previous team had developed an earlier WATFOR for the IBM 7040, the 360 became the foundation architecture for several generations of IBM mainframes.

On April 17 and 18, students, faculty, and members of the community gathered to take part in the inaugural Research Discovery Days, a research showcase and networking event hosted by the Math Innovation Office. The event, which featured both faculty and graduate student research presentations as well as discussions about entrepreneurship, aimed to connect industry partners with researchers doing exciting work in the Faculty of Mathematics.
