Student experience goes beyond the classroom. There are a wealth of experiences waiting for you to explore. Our math students join clubs like MathSoc, attend formal dinners like Math Grad Ball, participate in events like Humans vs. Zombies, hackathons, volunteering, math and computing competitions, and our annual Pi Day celebration on March 14 at 1:59 p.m. (3.14159!....).
Clubs and societies
There are many mathematics clubs created by the Mathematics Sociey (MathSoc), specifically for Faculty of Mathematics students.
There are also over 150 cross campus clubs through the Waterloo Undergraduate Student Association (WUSA).
Have a specific interest? Start your own club!
Intramurals and sports
Students get moving with athletic clubs, intramurals and instructional classes. They can join a personal or team-centrered recreation to support their physical and mental health. E-sports are available too!
Varsity sports allow students to train, workout, and play games with the influence with a coach.
Math and computing competitions
Hackathons are hosted on and off campus throughout the year allowing math and computer science to use their problem-solving smarts to solve global and corporate problems.
Math competitions like the Putnam Contest and ACM-International Collegiate Programming Competition allow students to flex their math and logical thinking against students at other top universities.
Volunteering
Outside of clubs, many math students volunteer their time at future student events like Waterloo Open House. They enjoy talking with high school students about their student experience, co-op and the value of a Waterloo math degree.
Math students can apply to join the Math Ambassador team and share their love of math! It's a great way to meet other students and develop a resume.
Humans vs. Zombies is a student-led massive game of tag, played with two teams: Humans and Zombies. Humans must survive by completing missions and stunning zombies with Nerf and sock weaponry. Zombies attempt to infect humans by tagging them. Join in the fun, if you dare!!
Living in Waterloo
Student-living is all part of the university experience. You can live on campus in a traditional-style or suite-style residence, or you can live off campus in your own student housing. Wherever you choose to call home, the City of Waterloo has lots to offer.
Waterloo Park is a 5-minute walk away from campus featuring live animals in the summer and festival lights in the winter, with lots of bubble tea shops, restaurants, and student activities in the surrounding area. There are two major malls with transit access to do all of your shopping. Movie theatres, dance halls and even a ping pong lounge are located in UpTown Waterloo.
