AMS invention Run Ze Gao, PhD candidate and CEO of Air Microfluidics Systems (AMS) Inc. recently won the 2021 Falcon's Fortune Pitch run by Ontario-based venture firm, FACIT. AMS, the startup co-founded by Gao and MME professor Carolyn Ren, were recognized for the novel concept of an air microfluidics-enabled compression sleeve to treat breast cancer-related lymphedema. 

In Fall 2020, to mitigate the boredom and restrictions of quarantine, social distancing and working from home, third year MME students in ME380 (Mechanical) or MTE380 (Mechatronics) Engineering Design Workshop were asked to identify and solve a need related to a specific challenge created or amplified as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Carolyn RenCongratulations to MME professor Carolyn Ren for winning the Faculty's Award of Excellence in Graduate Supervision for 2020 - 2021.

She is currently supervising 11 graduate students and has graduated over 17 master’s and 11 doctoral students in the past 12 years.

Professor Ren’s former students fondly attribute their career successes, both in academia and in industry, to the excellent supervision and training she provided.

An online-based education company co-founded by two Waterloo Mechatronics Engineering alumni announced this week that they have secured a 150 million dollar investment from US private-equity giant TPG Growth. 

Prodigy Education is one of the fastest growing e-learning services in North American with upwards of 90 million monthly users. It was launched initially by Rohan Mahimker and Alex Peters, two mechatronics engineering students here at Waterloo.

It is of great sadness to announce the passing of Aidan Walker, a second-year mechatronics engineering student who passed away on January 2, 2021 due to a brain aneurysm. 

Aidan was an outgoing 19 year-old young man with a bright future. He was a competitive swimmer where he competed at the national level. He was also a top student graduating highschool with the highest honours.

He passed away peacefully at St. Michael's Hospital surrounded by family.

The University of Waterloo and the National Research Council (NRC) are combining efforts to accelerate 3D printing processes using metals. One key focus of this collaboration will be the development of experimental metal alloy powders to be used in the printing process. 

MME professor Sanjeev Bedi recently won the F2020 semester Teaching Excellence Award for providing an exceptional online learning experience for his students. During lectures, professor Bedi always gives real-life examples and makes sure to connect with each and every student to ensure each student is understanding the material. He is a friend to all his students and will often emphasize tips on how to balance both school and a healthy lifestyle.
