Despite an overall decline in prescribed opioid use in Canada over the past decade, a recent study by researchers from the School of Pharmacy at the University of Waterloo, found that people in poorer areas receive three times the prescriptions for opioids than those in wealthier areas.

Giving back to our community

On May 29, 2025, the University of Waterloo School of Pharmacy faculty, staff and students prepared and served dinner at the Ray of Hope Community Centre for people experiencing houselessness and systemic barriers to acquiring meals in the community.

Benjamin Longley (Rx2028) and his research partner Connie Chong, MSc student in the Master of Peace and Conflict program, worked together to understand the barriers refugees face when accessing healthcare in Canada. Their project won third place in the Map the System Competition, sponsored by the Waterloo Institute for Complexity and Innovation (WICI).
