University of Waterloo – Beijing Jiaotong University Joint Undergraduate Program in Materials and Nanosciences

Building Global Leaders in Materials and Nanosciences

Since 2013, the University of Waterloo (UW) and Beijing Jiaotong University (BJTU) have partnered to deliver an international undergraduate program in Materials and Nanosciences. This long-standing collaboration combines the academic strengths of two leading institutions and provides students with a unique opportunity to develop advanced scientific knowledge, international experience, and cross-cultural competencies.

Each year, approximately 60 students are admitted to the program through Beijing Jiaotong University. Many students have participated in this successful partnership, gaining a truly global educational experience that prepares them for graduate studies and careers in science, engineering, and technology.


Program Structure

The program follows a 2+1+1 model, allowing students to study in both China and Canada:

Years 1–2: Beijing Jiaotong University

Students recruited through Gaokao (the National College Entrance Examination in China) into and begin their studies at BJTU, completing foundational courses in materials science, nanoscience, mathematics, chemistry, physics, and related disciplines.

As part of the program curriculum, students complete six or seven University of Waterloo courses, delivered in China by UW instructors, during their first two years of study.

Year 3: University of Waterloo

Qualified students come to the University of Waterloo for one academic year. During this period, students immerse themselves in Waterloo's internationally recognized learning environment, benefiting from world-class faculty, advanced research facilities, and a vibrant multicultural campus community.

Year 4: Beijing Jiaotong University

Following their year in Canada, students return to BJTU to complete their final year of study. They bring back enhanced academic capabilities, broadened perspectives, and valuable international experience that enrich both their educational journey and their academic community.


Admission to the UWaterloo Study Year

Participation in the University of Waterloo study component is a required and integral part of the joint program. Students seeking to continue to UW in their third year must successfully complete a comprehensive selection process that includes:

  • Strong academic performance during Years 1 and 2
  • Completion of required University of Waterloo courses taught by UW instructors in China
  • Demonstration of English language proficiency
  • Successful completion of an interview conducted by faculty members from the English Language Institute at Renison University College, University of Waterloo

This rigorous screening process ensures that students are well prepared to succeed in an English-language academic environment and to benefit fully from their international study experience.


Academic Recognition and Transfer Credits

Based on coursework completed during the first two years and the fourth year at Beijing Jiaotong University, students may receive:

  • Up to 10 lecture units (equivalent to 20 University of Waterloo lecture courses) in transfer credit
  • Applicable laboratory credits, where appropriate

These transfer credits enable students to progress efficiently through the degree requirements at the University of Waterloo while maintaining academic continuity between the two institutions.


Dual Degree Opportunity

Students who successfully complete all program requirements receive degrees from both institutions:

Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)
Nanomaterials and Technology

University of Waterloo

Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
Materials and Nanosciences

This dual-degree credential reflects the international nature of the program and demonstrates graduates' achievement across two respected higher education systems.
