Welcome to Science!
Congratulations on joining the University of Waterloo - Faculty of Science! Your role may require access to several different systems. Please ask your supervisor to submit a request to Science Computing for the following:
User ID (WatIAM) activation | R: drive | OneDrive | Shared Mailboxes | Hardware
User ID (WatIAM) activation
If you are preparing for your position before your official start date or your paperwork has not yet been processed by Human Resources, your supervisor can request an early activation by contacting sci@uwaterloo.atlassian.net. This is also known as "employee pre-create".
If you were ever an applicant, student, or employee with the University prior, please let us know your user ID. It should be your first initial followed by your last name and may include a number.
R: Drive access
Your supervisor will need to request access to the R: Drive, so you're added to the appropriate security groups. Once added, you can follow the R: Drive instructions to complete the setup process.
OneDrive
Upon the activation of your account with the University of Waterloo, you will gain access to OneDrive. This allows you to access your files from anywhere. You can follow the OneDrive instructions to complete the setup process.
Shared mailboxes
There are two types of Microsoft email accounts used for shared mailboxes.
- Method 1: Shared mailboxes
- User logs in with their own credentials
- Your supervisor must first request to add you to the appropriate security group to gain access to the shared mailbox
- A0 License - Email and calendar only
- Method 2: Generic user mailboxes
- User logs in with the generic user account credentials (e.g. shared@uwaterloo.ca and password that your supervisor provided)
- A3 License- Full access to M365 desktop applications
- University pays a license for these

Hardware
Your supervisor will let you know what equipment will be provided to you.
Science Computing can:
- Clear data on devices between users
- Perform hardware setup
- Mediate the purchase of equipment when given an account code (Contact Rick Loney if this service is needed)
