This past Saturday, the University of Waterloo science buildings were filled with laughter, smiles, and exclamations of discovery, as families from the Kitchener-Waterloo community gathered for a day of curiosity-driven exploration and experimentation. The annual Science Open House and Gem and Mineral Show drew large crowds to UWaterloo.
The University of Waterloo officially launched its astrophysics centre today.
The Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics (WCA) is being launched to build on the University’s record of success in astrophysics, which includes the creation of the theories tested by the first-ever image of a black hole to be taken. The centre also aims to advance human understanding of phenomena such as dark energy, dark matter and the nature of supermassive black holes.
Vice-President, Academic & Provost Jim Rush has announced the recipients of the 2018 Outstanding Performance Award.
Effective May 1, 2005, in accordance with the 2003 Faculty Salary Settlement, the University of Waterloo established an Outstanding Performance Fund to reward faculty members for outstanding contribution in teaching and scholarship.

Vision scientist Natalie Hutchings and Biology continuing lecturer Marcel Pinheiro have been awarded the Faculty of Science's 2019 Excellence in Science Teaching Award for their innovative and engaging teaching methods.
Today, the Centre for Bioengineering and Biotechnology (CBB) announced the recipients of their seed funding competition. A total of ten Waterloo professors were listed, including four researchers from the Faculty of Science. This is the second round of funding awarded under the program, which debuted last year.

“You are biased. And so am I,” was the message that started off the Equity, Diversity & Inclusion (EDI) seminar last week. Bias in science and academia is now being recognized as a prevalent problem, influencing hiring practices, attrition rates, and collaborations.
“Did you get your eyes checked?” an elderly gentleman asks a fellow patient in a hospital lunch room. When the other patient nods, he smiles.
These are two of the nearly 100 patients who are participating in a collaborative research project conducted by the University of Waterloo’s School of Optometry & Vision Science (WOVS) and Grand River Hospital (GRH), in Kitchener, Ontario. By agreeing to have their vision assessed, these patients are helping to shed light on a serious threat to seniors’ health ̶ falls.
