The spread of disinformation and misinformation — often fuelled by skepticism — is on the rise. Combating this trend and understanding why some people deny, doubt or resist scientific findings and explanations is crucial to addressing the complex and existential issues impacting our societies.
Recent studies in Canada have suggested that approximately 20 per cent of children aged 3 to 6 years have visual problems, such as amblyopia or clinically significant refractive errors. To ensure children have optimal vision for learning, the School of Optometry & Vision Science is partnering with The Cowan Foundation and the Lions Club of Canada. Together, they will develop a coordinated vision plan for the Region of Waterloo Public Health to screen every child in senior kindergarten (SK).
Yesterday, biologist Dr. Rebecca Rooney and her Waterloo Wetland Lab organized a successful wetland information session and clean-up event. The event took place at a small but highly visible urban wetland at the corner of Columbia and Fisher-Hallman roads in Waterloo, that has collected a large amount of unwelcomed litter.

An outreach program at the University of Waterloo that gets kids interested in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) through hands-on activities has been awarded almost $325,000 in federal funding over three years.
The money will be used by Engineering Science Quest (ESQ) to support full-time staff and a free workshop program designed to reach more girls, disadvantaged youths, Indigenous youths and youths with disabilities.
Together, the University of Waterloo’s Science Society, Science departmental clubs and the Psychology Society donated $5,500 to help the local community fight COVID-19. The donation came from unused event funds and was shared among three organizations.

Yesterday afternoon, 17 graduate students presented their research in just three minutes, using one static slide in the Science Faculty 3 Minute Thesis (3MT) competition. While this task may sound daunting, the competitors were well suited for the task, delivering interesting and captivating research presentations on a variety of topics, from microbes to black holes, and everything in between!
