University of Waterloo Writing Style Guide

Audiences vary, but generally, our readers understand plain language best. When we use simple, direct language our message is more likely to be read and understood. This style guide will help us to be consistent in how we deliver our messages, no matter the audience.

The Waterloo Writing Style Guide complements the University Brand Guidelines.

About this guide

The guide is considered the primary reference on all questions of writing style at the University of Waterloo. For questions about style and grammar not covered in this guide, please refer to The Canadian Press Stylebook, the Canadian Oxford Dictionary or The Canadian Press Caps and Spelling.

Because language is always changing and evolving, we update this guide on an ongoing basis. Please send all questions and feedback to urcomms@uwaterloo.ca and we’ll gladly respond.
