As financial landscapes evolve, understanding the nuances between U.S. and Canadian banking systems is more critical than ever. James Thompson, finance professor and co-director of the Computing and Financial Management (CFM) undergraduate program brings his deep knowledge to the conversation, explaining what these differences mean for businesses and consumers in Canada. 

Opportunities in Fintech a success. 

CFM co-director Justin Wan has received the 2023 Arthur Beaumont Distinguished Service Award from CAIMS, the Canadian Applied and Industrial Mathematics Society. Named after its first recipient, the award was established in 1987 to honour Waterloo Applied Mathematics Professor Arthur Beaumont for his many years of service to the society.

Professor James R. Thompson, co-director of the Computing and Financial Management program and a Professor at Waterloo’s School of Accounting and Finance, has been elected as a president of the Northern Finance Association, a Canadian-based association of researchers in the field of finance.

Keshav Chawla has long harboured a passion for computer science and finance. When he discovered a way to pursue both disciplines simultaneously through Waterloo’s Computing and Financial Management program, his choice of university was clear. “I knew how robust and built-out the program was before coming in,” he explained. “Having that combination of both disciplines was the perfect fit for me.”

The School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo recently hosted the 2015 Investment Research Challenge (IRC). The competition required student groups to analyze a publicly-traded stock and defend its buy/hold/sell recommendation.  

Congratulations goes to Priya Murali (2B CFM) and her team on taking home the $2,000 prize as the winning team. 

Peter Forsyth, a professor in Waterloo's Cheriton School of Computer Science and former CFM Co-Director, has developed an algorithm that shows how online brokerages are likely not handling investors' buy and sell orders in the best way possible. CFM students took the lead in the inaugural Investment Research Challenge hosted by the School of Accounting and Finance at the University of Waterloo. Congratulations goes to Linda Teng (4A CFM) and her team on taking home the $2,000 prize as the winning team. 

Student winners of this year’s Equity Research Challenge (ERC) cashed in on their prize by participating in the TSX opening ceremonies for the Toronto Stock Exchange on Thursday morning, March 28^th, with the winning students ringing the opening bell.
