Machine Learning in GIS: Using TensorFlow for Rasters

Thursday November 21st, 10:30am-11:30am

Computer Lab, Dana Porter Library (329)

Machine Learning is all over the news in the tech world. How can GIS users make use of this technology for their research and work?

This workshop focuses in on the GIS application of Machine Learning, including for raster analysis and how deep learning can aid in extracting vector features from imagery. GIS users and enthusiasts are invited to join us in learning about this exciting new application of data science.

City of Kitchener Municipal data update (2019)

Received from the City of Kitchener, 2019 municipal data updates including:  Bridges (Ontario Structure Inspection manual), Property Unit Location (base, vertical, horizontal), Zoning, Edge of Pavement, Impervious Area (non-residential: parking lots, walkways, driveways), Planning Intensification Areas, Road Island and Buildings.

GIS Day: November 13, 2019

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) Day is an international event where users of GIS are encouraged to open their doors and share how they use this technology.

GIS Day 2019 will be held on Wednesday, November 13, 2019 at the Geospatial Centre in the Dana Porter Library.

Workshop: QGIS + Open source GIS

Tuesday, November 19th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Dana Porter Computer Lab (LIB 329)

Ever wanted to try Open Source GIS but didn’t know where to start?

This workshop builds on “Getting Started with ArcGIS” (a recommended prerequisite for those with no previous GIS experience) but isn’t absolutely necessary. It will go through the in's and out's of QGIS and also cover other alternative Open Source GIS platforms.

Workshop: Dynamic Flood Simulation with HEC-RAS

Wednesday, November 20th - 1:00 pm - 4:00 pm

Dana Porter Computer Lab (LIB 329)

This workshop is a primer for working with computational hydrology software and, as such, assumes a good grounding in most GIS concepts of spatial and raster analysis. The tutorial is designed to get you comfortable with HEC RAS's specific requirements for creating a dynamic flood simulation.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

Workshop: Getting Started with ArcGIS

Monday, November 18th –1:00 pm – 4:00 pm

Dana Porter Computer Lab (LIB 329)

You may have heard of GIS, but what exactly is it, and more importantly, how can you use it in your own research and academic work?

This introductory workshop presents the basic concepts of GIS and will teach you the skills you need to find geospatial data, map it, and discover new dimensions of information.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

DMTI 2019 data updates

Received from DMTI, 2019 data updates including: water, vegetation, transportation, (oil, gas, mines), forestry, hydro, government data, enhanced points of interest, elevation (points & 10 metre contours), business and economy, building structures, address points, address locator.

OpenStreetMap

OpenStreetMap is built by a community of mappers that contribute and maintain data about roads, trails, cafés, railway stations, and much more, all over the world.

OpenStreetMap is open data: you are free to use it for any purpose as long as you credit OpenStreetMap and its contributors. If you alter or build upon the data in certain ways, you may distribute the result only under the same licence. See the Copyright and License page for details.

Ontario GeoHub

Land Information Ontario introduces the Ontario GeoHub, the new data discovery and distribution service that will replace the Metadata Management Tool.

The Ontario GeoHub will allow you to:

Building heights: Risk Management Solutions Incorporated (RMSI) Global data

Updates to this building height data was received from Risk Management Solutions Incorporated (RMSI) global in the spring/summer of 2019.

Teranet's Province of Ontario Land Registry Information System (POLARIS) property boundaries data

These datasets were provided to the Geospatial Centre by Teranet in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2018. Ownership parcels are based on title records from the Ministry of Government Services, reflecting the ownership boundaries of each property.

StatsCan: Geospatial web services for socioeconomic variables

The Platform aims to make geospatial information available in a coherent way to the public, academic institutions, the private sector and others to conduct research or produce value-added products and applications, driving innovation and stimulating economic development.

The Federal Geospatial Platform has two faces: an internal site that can be found at gcgeo.gc.ca (internal government network), and a public site entitled Open Maps, on the Open Government Portal.

Workshop: Dynamic Flood Simulation with HEC-RAS

Tuesday, May 14th, 2019 1:00 pm - 3:00 pm
Dana Porter Computer Lab (LIB 329)

This workshop is a primer for working with computational hydrology software and, as such, assumes a good grounding in most GIS concepts of spatial and raster analysis. The tutorial is designed to get you comfortable with HEC RAS's specific requirements for creating a dynamic flood simulation.

By the end of the workshop, you will be able to:

Open building data: Statistics Canada

This exploratory initiative aims at enhancing the use and harmonization of open building data from government sources for the purpose of contributing to the creation of a complete, comprehensive and open database of buildings in Canada.

Digital Historical Air Photos of the City of Guelph

Air photos for the City of Guelph for the years 1930, 1955, and 1966 have been scanned, digitized and georeferenced and are available for public viewing and downloading. Image formats include jpg, tiff, pdf, and KMZ files (for Google Earth).  All image formats can be viewed in a GIS program.

For access to the original scanned images or paper air photos, please visit the Geospatial Centre.
