Freedom to explore

“Waterloo is a place where students have the opportunity to try so many different things.”

Many students feel pressured to decide on a defined career path early on in their undergraduate career. Joy Zhang isn’t one of them. The second-year Financial Analysis & Risk Management (FARM) student is embracing the opportunity to explore her options in her time at the University of Waterloo.

The Faculty of Mathematics celebrates the outstanding achievements of Yinan Li and Yilin Chen, the two recipients of the 2020 Huawei Prize for Best Research Paper by a Mathematics Graduate Student. Both students published research papers that advance their field of study with an innovative approach to a complex problem.

Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Jesse Hoey has had a curious career trajectory.

His academic life began with an undergraduate degree in physics, followed by a master’s in physical oceanography, then a PhD in computer science with specialization in artificial intelligence. He even had a stint working with occupational therapists as part of his postdoctoral studies, where he applied his expertise in AI to develop assistive technologies for people with dementia.
