After completing her undergraduate degree at Southwestern University of Finance and Economics in Sichuan, China majoring in Finance Statistics and Risk Management, Yueshan earned the opportunity to be an exchange student of the University of Waterloo in September 2014 with the Centre for Computational Mathematics.
Yueshan studies computational mathematics to learn advanced mathematical modeling and computing skills, preparing for studies of financial data analysis. She has started her research into modeling the cyber risk insurance market this year with the help of Professor Ken Seng Tan.
Yueshan was a winner of the China Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling (CUMCM) in 2012. Her group also participated in the Alibaba E-Business Data Analysis Contest, which is one of the well-known contests in China.
"I am honoured to be the recipient of the Fong Computational Mathematics Graduate Award," explained Yueshan. "It has been really fortunate for me to find out that data science is the field I am interested in and to immerse myself in the relevant studies and work. Starting graduate studies has been exciting as well as challenging. I am researching about modeling the market for cyber insurance now. [This] generosity will help to make more projects possible."
The Fong Computational Mathematics Graduate Award is awarded to a full-time graduate student registered in the Computational Mathematics graduate program in the Faculty of Mathematics. The award selection is based on scholastic excellence and demonstrated interest in computational and/or industrial mathematics. Scholarship winners are chosen by a committee.
This award is made possible by a donation from the Fong Education Foundation Limited.
