Research conducted by recent computer science master’s graduate Reza Nadri, recent postdoctoral researcher Gema Rodríguez-Pérez and their supervisor Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Mei Nagappan found that the perceived race and ethnicity of a developer — based on just their user name — can affect how the developer’s contributions to open source software projects are evaluated.

Two entrepreneurial teams with links to the Faculty of Mathematics advanced to the final of the bi-annual Concept $5K challenge, which is hosted by the Velocity startup incubator.

The second of two semi-final events for the Concept 5K challenge took place Thursday, July 15.

Concept 5K is a competition for startups and entrepreneurial ventures, in which teams get to showcase their new or emerging companies and products.

Five teams with affiliations to the Faculty of Mathematics pitched their entrepreneurial ventures as part of the first of two semi-final events in the Concept 5K startup challenge.

The Faculty of Mathematics Research Office recently announced its 2021 recipients of the Golden Jubilee Research Excellence Award. Eduardo Martin-Martinez, an associate professor in applied mathematics, and Sophie Spirkl, an assistant professor in combinatorics and optimization, were this year’s winners.

The Faculty of Mathematics Employee Health and Well-being Committee is hosting its annual community assemblies July 14-29.

All staff and faculty members are welcome to participate. The assemblies provide a confidential and safe environment in which employees can discuss any challenges and raise concerns related to health and well-being.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Peter Forsyth, Professor Ken Vetzal from the School of Accounting and Finance, and Graham Westmacott, portfolio manager at PWL Capital, have received the 2021 Brockett–Shapiro Actuarial Journal Award from ARIA — the American Risk and Insurance Association. 

Research conducted by recent computer science master’s graduate Iman Akbari received a Best Student Paper award at SIGMETRICS 2021, the flagship conference of the Association for Computing Machinery’s special interest group for the computer systems performance evaluation community.

Vivek Goel, incoming president and vice-chancellor of the University of Waterloo, has been named a fellow of the Fields Institute for Research in Mathematical Sciences.
