Five projects from the Faculty of Mathematics have received funding as part of the recent Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA) Research-for-Impact (RFI) grants. The grants, which total more than $260,000 in research funding, are part of WISA’s partnership with the aeronautics industry and the Canadian government.

From the sepia tones of a Coen brothers film set in the Dust Bowl to a child’s red coat in Schindler’s List, filmmakers have long known the power of colour in movies. Now, computer scientists have analyzed 60 years of films to paint a picture of the past six decades in film.

Researchers at the University of Waterloo used a technique called k-means clustering to analyze the trailers for more than 29,000 North American movies released between 1960 and 2019.

Researchers at the Institute for Quantum Computing (IQC) have implemented the first experiment in which quantum entanglement is used as a resource to activate the vacuum zero-point energy.

This fall semester, a new Living and Learning Community (LLC) program focused on Honors Math will launch. The program will connect first-year students living in residence by creating clusters of students who take classes together, live in the same residences, and participate in intentional community-building activities.

Congratulations to Pure Mathematics PhD candidate Jacob Campbell and recent Computer Science master’s graduate Mahbod Majid, the 2023 recipients of the Faculty of Mathematics Graduate Research Excellence Awards. The prestigious recognition comes with a $5,000 cash prize and is conferred annually to two graduate students in the Faculty of Mathematics who have authored or co-authored an outstanding research paper.
