Jo Atlee, director of Women in Computer Science, has received the 2022 ACM SIGSOFT Distinguished Service Award, an honour bestowed for her sustained and outstanding service to the software engineering community and for enabling an equitable, diverse and inclusive research environment in software engineering worldwide.
Cheryl Lao, a master’s student at the Cheriton School of Computer Science, is one of 16 recipients across North America and one of four from Canada to receive a 2022 Adobe Research Women-in-Technology Scholarship. As a recipient of this prestigious award, she will receive $10,000 USD for education expenses and a year-long Adobe Creative Cloud subscription.
A few years ago, one of Trisha Kothari’s sisters asked their aging grandmother a thought-provoking question: “If you were reborn into our generation, what would you do with your life?”
Their grandmother, Barji, who had grown up in India at a time when women had few rights and even fewer opportunities, wasted no time answering.
“Oh, I’d definitely not get married. I would study and start a business,” she told her.

Faculty of Mathematics alum Lisa Bentley (BMath’ 92) has penned a special editorial for Waterloo Magazine, in which she describes being a high-calibre triathlete with cystic fibrosis (CF).
Bentley says that while CF made her training and competing difficult, it also provided a kind of motivation.
