Declaring majors
Please review the information below that outlines the requirements and procedures for declaring majors in the Faculty of Mathematics.
If you have further questions, please contact the relevant academic advisor.
*For the requirements below, MAV (major average) refers to all of your math faculty courses (MATH, ACTSC, CO, CS, STAT, AMATH, PMATH). Note: this is for students who started from Fall 2014 onwards. CAV (cumulative average) refers to all courses taken (math and non-math).
Actuarial Science
Requirements
- Completed MTHEL131 with a minimum grade of 60.0%; or, for Business Administration and Mathematics Double degree students, a minimum grade of C- in BUS121W.
- A minimum special major average of 70.0%;
- or if a SMAV does not yet exist, a minimum cumulative average of 70.0% on at least 10 courses, and no failed courses (i.e. no grades <50, or DNWs, or WFs).

Note: The ACTSC Special Major Average (SMAV) is the average of STAT 230/231, ACTSC 231/232, and all 300-400 level math courses, and it exists once there are at least 3 courses in the average.

Applied Mathematics
Requirements
Applied Mathematics (including Biology and Economics specializations)
- Completed all first-year math courses: Math 135, 136, 137, 138, CS 115/135, 116/136
- MAV* of 65%
Applied Mathematics/Physics Specialization
- Completed all first-year math courses: Math 135, 136, 137, 138, CS 115/135, 116/136
- Completion of PHYS 121 and PHYS 122
- MAV* of 65%
Applied Mathematics/Engineering Specialization
- Completed all first-year math courses: Math 135, 136, 137, 138, CS 115/135, 116/136
- Completion of PHYS 121 and PHYS 122
- Completion of GENE 123
- MAV* of 65%
Applied Mathematics/Scientific Computing
- Completed all first-year math courses: Math 135, 136, 137, 138, CS 115/135, 116/136
- MAV* of 65%

Biostatistics
Requirements:
- A student with CAV >= 60% and MAV >= 65% in the Faculty of Mathematics may ask to be admitted to Statistics, Biostatistics or Statistics for Health, provided they have passed a minimum of 10 courses.
- Note: the MAV for calendars in 2014 and on includes all math courses.

- Limited enrolment/competitive entry. Complete form by the last day of classes in the term you are taking CS 136.
Combinatorics & Optimization
Requirements
- At least 2A standing
- Have MAV* of 65%+
- Strongly recommend that you complete MATH 239 and/or CO 250 before declaring CO as your major.

Mathematics/Teaching
Requirements
- Be in the co-op program**
- Submit an application in 2A
** Students in CPA would need to switch to Honours Math/Teaching. Recommend CS students also switch to Honours Math/Teaching.
Difficult for DD students to complete all requirements so not recommended.
Students can do a Major/Teaching degree. Would follow Major course requirements plus some Math/Teaching requirements.
