When the University’s research labs shut down for quarantine, biology professor Brian Dixon pivoted some of his research away from blood testing in fish, into looking at blood testing in humans. Instead of sitting around and waiting for his labs to open again, Dixon wanted to use his time and knowledge of biology and immunology to contribute to the global need for understanding and overcoming COVID-19.

An interdisciplinary team of researchers at the University of Waterloo have won $265,000 in funding to develop a palm-sized device capable of detecting COVID-19 infection within 30 minutes. The funding from the Government of Canada, through the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, along with provincial partners is in response to their continued efforts to address the health challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada and around the globe.

Dave Rudolph, Chair and a professor in the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences, is the recipient of the 2020 Robert N. Farvolden Award for his research in groundwater management and innovative methods to monitor water resources in the face of changing land use and climate.

This award is given by the Canadian National Chapter of the International Association of Hydrogeologists and Canadian Geotechnical Society to honour an individual's outstanding contributions to the disciplines of earth science and engineering that emphasize the role or importance of groundwater.

As the Government of Canada focuses on responding to the challenges of COVID-19, it also recognizes the invaluable contributions of Canadian researchers in the natural sciences and engineering. That is why the Government continues to support the discovery research being done at Canadian universities to help build the foundation for innovation and economic growth.
