Program: Psychology, Biology Minor
Year: 4
Stream of study: Co-op
Pronouns: She/Her
Career goal: I want to be in a field that allows me to pursue aspects of both psychology and biology. Right now I'm considering medical school with the idea of following through into neurology. If that doesn't work out I'm also considering a Master of Science in Neuroscience.
How I get involved: Beyond being a science ambassador for a few years now I've started a few more positions. This semester I'm working in a psychology lab on campus, which is a great way to get some hands-on experience, talk to profs, and earn a bit of money. I'm also volunteering at Grand River Hospital helping out with wayfinding.
Why I love my program
The main reason I love my program is that I love the subject matter! I'm passionate about psychology and biology and I find the courses endlessly interesting. There are so many great options for things to take that cover a wide range of topics. Another important factor is the flexibility of the program. The program is designed to have a fairly even split of psychology and science classes that you have to take, but which classes you take in those subjects is almost entirely up to you. You can take the courses you find most interesting. It makes it super easy to add a science minor if you want to, because you have to take a bunch of science classes anyway!
Why University of Waterloo?
I had two main reasons for choosing UW. The first is the co-op program. I want to spend my life doing a job that I love, and co-op has allowed me to try different things to see what sort of things I actually enjoy. Now that I'm graduating I know that my original idea of a career path isn't what I want anymore, and without co-op I might never have learned that about myself! The thing second is the city. I've lived here part time for ten years and I love that it's not too big and not too small. It's the perfect walkable city with places to go when you need a break or a change of scenery. Waterloo Park in particular has gotten even nicer over the years I've been here!
