9 years ago on August 7th, 2014, the hearts of so many in our community and around the world broke.  

9 years ago, we remember and honour the legacy of a renowned United College and University of Waterloo student, student-athlete, student lifeguard, residence don, youth ambassador, and global change-maker: Alex Foto. 

Below is a testimony of a United College Staff Member and Donor of the Alex Foto Memorial Fund in memory of 9 years since she passed. 

Happy 60^th anniversary United College!   

Sixty years after United College welcomed its first cohort of students in 1963, the college once again opened its doors and invited guests to back campus to celebrate 60 years of academic excellence and community at a special summer BBQ on Saturday, July 15^th, 2023.   

Convocation is a coming together.    

It is a coming together of students, family, and friends to celebrate achievements, to highlight successes along academic journeys, to commemorate moving on to an exciting new chapter. It is a recognition of shared trials and tribulations, of overcoming obstacles and navigating rocks in one’s path.

A beer-tasting tour featuring local craft brews, alumni and friends rotating between four timeless venues, and perfectly paired gourmet appetizers. An exclusive Alumni Weekend experience that the University Colleges at the University of Waterloo are uniquely positioned to offer, was on tap June 2, 2023.             

The university colleges at the University of Waterloo have a deep history of collaboration and offer a rich tradition of social connection and community in support of students as they progress on their academic journeys.  

United College recently announced the launch of an innovative initiative to deliver indigenized entrepreneurship education.  

United College alumnus Christina Hassan was presented with the Young Alumni Award at a special ceremony in Calgary on April 26, 2023.  Fellow alumni, family, friends, and United College staff, gathered to pay tribute to Christina’s accomplishments.    

The Young Alumni Award recognizes leadership, volunteerism, and lifelong learning.

United College alumnus Alison Jackson was presented with the Distinguished Alumni Award at a special ceremony in Calgary on April 26, 2023. Fellow alumni, family, friends, and United College staff, gathered to pay tribute to Alison’s accomplishments.    

The Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes exemplary careers, dedication to a profession, and service to the community.

The External Relations team revived the annual United College Gratitude Dinner on March 20^th. 

Geography student Elizabeth Beach who recently won the Cronk-Mastin scholarship at the Stanley Knowles lecture explains the importance of giving back for Giving Tuesday.
