There are some very important deadlines that you need to understand when you are enrolling in courses. All of these deadlines are listed on Important Dates.

Course selection week (returning students)

Course selection week is useful for both students and the university. Students use this week to request courses, and the university analyzes course demand and makes provisions for high-demand courses. If you miss course selection week, you have to wait until the Drop/Add period to enrol in courses.

You can view the undergraduate schedule of classes or course selection offerings list to assist you in determining what courses you would like to take in the future.

New students

If you are a new Waterloo student starting courses in the fall, your course selection week will be different than returning Waterloo students. Be sure to check out how to select your classes and view the available first-year Fall and Winter courses on the New Student Course Selection

Drop/Add period

During the Drop/Add period, Quest allows you to view your course selection results and determine if any changes need to be made. If changes must occur, you can do so during your appointment time. There are options to Add, Drop, or Swap courses to create the schedule that works best for you.

If you are trying to replace one class with another, we highly recommend you use the Swap course tool instead of the Drop course tool. This will allow you to still be enrolled in your original course if any errors occur.

If you would like to enrol in a course that is full or restricted, contact the academic advisor for that program (for example, contact the Department of French Studies if you would like to enrol in a French course). They will be able to assist you and where possible, help you enrol.

If you want to drop a course, drop dates can be found in the list of Calendar of Events and Academic Deadlines.

  • Drop, no penalty
During this period, you will be able to withdraw from any course with a 100% tuition refund and no grade assigned.
  • Drop, penalty 1
During this period, you will receive a WD (Withdrew, no credit granted) grade assigned for course(s) dropped.
  • Drop, penalty 2
During this period, you will receive a WF (Withdrew/Failure, no credit granted, value 32%) grade assigned for course(s) dropped.

Your academic advisor should be consulted prior to dropping a course.

Visit the Registrar's Office website for more information on the course selection period.
