Analyzing trends on Twitter and Google can help predict vaccine scares that can lead to disease outbreaks, according to a study from the University of Waterloo.

In the study, researchers examined Google searches and geocoded tweets with the help of artificial intelligence and a mathematical model. The resulting data enabled them to analyze public perceptions on the value of getting vaccinated and determine when a population was getting close to a tipping point.

Jun Liu and Karen Yeats recognized for research excellence

Faculty members Jun Liu and Karen Yeats have been named Canada Research Chairs, as part of the Government of Canada’s - Canada Research Chairs Program. Jun is chairholder for his work in Hybrid Systems and Control, and Karen is chairholder for her work in Combinatorics of Quantum Field Theory.

IOI 2017 Team Canada
Troy Vasiga and I are proud to announce the accomplishments of the four contestants representing Canada at the International Olympiad in Informatics held in Tehran, Iran from July 28, 2017 to August 4, 2017.

This is an annual competition for high school students in algorithmic problem-solving and computer programming. It is an elite event representing just over 300 of the brightest students in this discipline from around the world

Spring Convocation 2017

Congratulations to today's graduates and honorees!

Today, graduating students in the Faculty of Mathematics will receive their degrees. Follow along with the Convocation livestream.

The first ceremony takes place at 10:00 a.m. today. 420 undergraduates, 100 Master's, and 14 PhDs will cross the stage. Katherine Bergman, President and Vice-Chancellor, St. Jerome’s University, will bear the mace. Michael Klein will sing the national anthem.

The sixth annual Jessie W.H. Zou Memorial Award for Excellence in Undergraduate Research has been awarded to graduating student Rudi Chen.

Rudi was nominated by Professor Peter van Beek, with whom he worked as an NSERC undergraduate research assistant. He is completing Bachelor of Computer Science degree.

Eighteen University of Waterloo researchers have received Early Researcher Awards worth $2.5 million. The announcement is part of larger investment by the Province of Ontario aimed at advancing Ontario’s competitive edge. Two of those researchers are members of the Faculty of Mathematics.

Each researcher will receive $140,000 over five years plus an additional $50,000 from the University.

J. G. Kalbfleisch 1940-2017

Jim Kalbfleisch passed away Sunday, April 23, 2017 at his home in Waterloo. Jim served as Chair of the Department of Statistics (now Statistics and Actuarial Science) from 1975-79. He was Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics from 1986 - 1989, leaving that position to serve as Associate Provost, Academic Affairs from 1990-1993 and then Vice-President Academic and Provost from 1993 – 2000.
