THIS EVENT IS AT CAPACITY AND REGISTRATION IS NOW CLOSED.
The Department of Physics and Astronomy will host 65 girls (female, non-binary and trans) in Grades 7 and 8 for an online evening of activities to encourage and engage in the exploration of physics. If you are in middle school and have an inquisitive, creative mind this free evening event will broaden your understanding of what physics is, what physicists do, and what is so interesting about this field. The evening will consist of a keynote speaker, and two workshops.
Dr. Katie Mack will share her experiences in "Exploring the Cosmos with Physics". Dr. Mack is a theoretical astrophysicist exploring a range of questions in cosmology, the study of the universe from beginning to end. She is currently an assistant professor of physics at North Carolina State University, where she is also a member of the Leadership in Public Science Cluster. She is the author of the book "The End of Everything (Astrophysically Speaking)" and has written for a number of popular publications, such as Scientific American, Slate, Sky & Telescope, Time, and Cosmos magazine. She can be found on Twitter as @AstroKatie.
Workshop topics vary through the fields of physics. Participants choose their top three workshops and will be enrolled in two. Each workshop includes hands-on activities and problem-solving. Participants are encouraged to engage in breakout room conversations and group work.
