As a researcher, you know your work has made an impact on other academics when they cite your work in their own. The 2023 Clarivate Highly Cited Researchers list highlights 6,849 individuals from around the globe who are the top-cited researchers. Of the world’s population of scientists and social scientists, the Highly Cited Researchers on this list are 1 in 1000. That makes this quite the exclusive list.

218 Canadian-based researchers are included on this year’s list, ranking Canada sixth in the world behind the United States, Mainland China, UK, Germany and Australia, who make up the top 5 (in that order). Within that 218, there are 12 people from the University of Waterloo and three from the Faculty of Science to celebrate.

Congratulations to Juewen Liu (Chemistry), Linda Nazar (Chemistry), and Will Percival (Physics & Astronomy and the Waterloo Centre for Astrophysics) for representing Science and the university of this list. Liu and Percival are both marking their second appearance on the list, while Nazar has been on the list nine out of the last 10 years. Their work clearly resonates with the research community and their findings have inspired others to push boundaries and explore what’s next in their own research.
