The Undergraduate Mathematics Symposium at the University of Illinois at Chicago is set to take place on Saturday, November 13.

The annual one-day meeting focuses on undergraduate mathematical research. Organizers are calling for interested undergraduate students in mathematics to apply to participate in the symposium by November 1.

The Faculty of Mathematics will be hosting a special dean's townhall event for faculty members and staff, October 12, from 2:00 to 3:00 PM. The townhall is a virtual event on MS Teams. All faculty members and staff received an email invitation on September 23.

A new program for health and well-being is rolling out in the Faculty of Mathematics. The ‘Have your Say’ initiative aims to involve students, faculty and staff in directing activities and resources for wellness.

As excitement builds across campus for the launch of the Waterloo Institute for Sustainable Aeronautics (WISA), researchers in diverse disciplines are showcasing the ways their work connects with the new institute’s mandate.

One of those researchers is Sander Rhebergen, an associate professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics. Rhebergen’s specialization is in computational fluid dynamics. Research in fluid dynamics looks at the ways flow and resistance operate in liquids, gases and plasmas.

Chris Bauch, an applied mathematics professor and University Research Chair, recently published a paper in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) on new research related to a deep learning algorithm capable of detecting and predicting tipping points.

Each year the Faculty of Mathematics awards research chairs to exceptional faculty members. Kirsten Morris, a professor in the Department of Applied Mathematics, was one of the recipients for 2021-22. 

With a new academic year starting, the Faculty of Mathematics has awarded one of its coveted research chairs to Matthew Satriano, an associate professor in the Department of Pure Mathematics. The annual award recognizes excellence in research and outstanding contributions to a scholarly field.

As the fall semester begins, the Faculty of Mathematics welcomes six first-year students who have already distinguished themselves academically as recipients of the coveted Schulich Leader Scholarship. 

Richard J. Cook, a professor in the Department of Statistics and Actuarial Sciences, has been named a fellow the Royal Society of Canada (RSC). The prestigious RSC award accentuates Cook’s storied academic career and voluminous research portfolio.

The Association for Women in Mathematics (AWM) recently awarded Anita Layton with one of its fellowships.
