Maria Petrescu a terminé son doctorat à l’Université de Waterloo avec une thèse sur l’image de la prison dans la littérature française et québécoise, avant d’enseigner des cours de littérature et de français langue seconde dans plusieurs universités ontariennes. À présent, elle se consacre à l'étude de la souffrance dans la littérature carcérale. Maria s’intéresse aussi à l’image de la femme, de l’amour et du mariage dans la littérature de la Renaissance et a publié plusieurs articles dans le domaine de la linguistique.
