Description of the Honours and Four-year general French programs:
The French Honours and the Four-Year General French programs are comprised of 16 French courses:
11 core courses are required:
- FR 192A, FR 192B, FR 251, FR 252, FR 351, and FR 452 are the French language courses designed to focus on and strengthen language acquisition, including vocabulary, grammar, and conjugation. First-year courses emphasize oral and listening practice, as well as general culture about francophone countries and regions. As students advance through the program, they deepen their knowledge of the French language and develop proficiency in idiomatic writing skills.
- FR 250 is a conversation course to practice real-life scenarios and spontaneous understanding and expression.
- FR 276, FR 296, and FR 297 are introduction to civilization and literature courses from the Medieval to present times, and in various French speaking regions (France, Québec, Maghreb, Sub-Saharan Africa, Caribbean, etc.)
- FR 303 introduces the principles of linguistic analysis which will help students understand the structures and functions of French as well as other languages.
A selection of 5 upper-year courses is also required:
- A minimum of 2 courses must be literature and/or culture courses, building on the second-year introduction courses (FR 276, 296 and 297). The literature and/or culture courses include FR 332, FR 344, FR 354, FR 363, FR 365, FR 367, FR 373, FR 375, FR 399, FR 410, FR 424, FR 471, FR 473, FR 484, FR 485, FR 486, FR 487
- The 3 other courses may be literature and / or culture courses, or some of our professional courses (translation, business French, phonetics, etc.): FR 355, FR 353, FR 400

Specializations in French Studies
Within our department, we offer the following Specializations to tailor your degree:
- Intensive French Specializations (not eligible for double counting):
Students enrolled in one of the above intensive specializations (FTS or FFLCS) may be eligible to apply for the $3,000 French as a Second Language (FSL) Bursary.
- Additional French Specialization:
- Professional French Specialization (PFS)
- This can be added to any of the above French majors, and either of the above Intensive French Specializations (FTS & FFLCS)
- Professional French Specialization (PFS)
Other Options
Students in our Honours French program, or our Intensive Specializations can also explore co-op programs to gain some paid work experience while completing their Undergraduate degree:
French majors have the option of combining their major plan with various minors, double-majors, specializations, diplomas, and certificates to create an accreditation as unique as themselves!
