Beyond the traditional pre-med path

For many students considering medicine, choosing the right undergraduate program is one of the first major decisions on their journey.

For Rithvika Ramesh, the Waterloo's Health Sciences program provided the academic foundation, real-world experience, and flexibility she needed to pursue medicine with confidence.

Today, Rithvika is a Resident Physician, but her path began in Waterloo's Health program, now known as Health Sciences.

Looking back, she credits the program with helping her succeed not only during the medical school application process, but also throughout medical school and residency training.

"My program at Waterloo was instrumental in shaping my path to medicine," she says. "It provided a foundation that supported me not only through the medical school interview process, but also throughout residency and, I hope, my future career."

A strong foundation for medical school

One of the advantages Rithvika found in Waterloo's Health Sciences program was its ability to balance rigorous academics with a broader understanding of health and healthcare systems.

The curriculum introduced her to concepts such as social determinants of health, health informatics, and systems thinking, topics that continue to influence her work as a physician today.

At the same time, the program allowed her to excel academically while maintaining a competitive GPA for medical school applications.

Beyond academics, Waterloo encouraged students to develop experiences and perspectives outside of the traditional pre-med pathway.

"The program encouraged me to grow beyond the traditional 'pre-med' trajectory," she explains.

One of the highlights of her undergraduate experience was a semester-long exchange in London, England, which broadened both her academic and personal perspectives.

Rather than focusing solely on building a medical school application, she was encouraged to explore interests that helped her become a more well-rounded learner and future healthcare professional.

The value of co-op and real-world experience

For Rithvika, the most impactful part of her undergraduate experience was Waterloo's co-op program.

Through four work placements, none of which were directly related to medicine, she gained valuable professional experience while learning more about herself and her career goals.

"These experiences ultimately clarified my decision to pursue medicine with intention and confidence," she says.

The opportunity to explore different sectors helped her better understand what meaningful work looked like and reinforced her desire to become a physician.

In a culture where aspiring medical students can sometimes feel pressure to follow a narrow path focused exclusively on research or medically related experiences, Waterloo offered something different.

The program encouraged curiosity, exploration, and personal growth.

Taking the time to engage with diverse career paths not only strengthened my conviction toward medicine but also helped me become a more thoughtful, adaptable, and well-rounded applicant.

Training and practicing medicine in Canada

After graduating from Waterloo, Rithvika attended medical school at McMaster University and later matched to residency in Canada.

Remaining in Canada throughout her medical education was an important goal.

"Canada's approach to medical education is truly exceptional, and I was committed to training within the healthcare system I eventually hoped to serve," she says.

Studying and training within the Canadian healthcare system allowed her to develop the clinical, cultural, and systems-level understanding needed to effectively care for patients in the communities she hopes to serve throughout her career.

She recognizes that many pathways can lead to medicine and values the contributions of physicians who complete training internationally.

At the same time, she feels fortunate to have been able to complete her education and residency within Canada.

Navigating the financial side of medicine

Medical training represents a significant investment, but Rithvika emphasizes that many supports exist to help students manage the financial aspects of pursuing medicine.

She notes that Canadian medical students may have access to government financial aid programs, professional student lines of credit, scholarships, bursaries, and institutional support.

"While the financial commitment can feel daunting, there are robust supports available to help you navigate it," she says.

Her advice to prospective students is to explore available resources and remember that financial barriers do not need to prevent talented students from pursuing a career in medicine.

The residency match experience

The residency application process is often viewed as one of the most significant milestones in a physician's training journey.

For Rithvika, matching into residency was the result of years of dedication, mentorship, and support.

Knowing she hoped to pursue family medicine in Toronto, she approached the process thoughtfully while applying broadly to programs.

She credits her medical school with providing exceptional guidance throughout the application process, including support with CV development, personal statements, and interview preparation.

Just as importantly, she recognizes the role her community played in her success.

"Matching into residency was a celebration not only of the work we did, but the work that was put into us," she says.

"It felt like a collective achievement."

A flexible program with multiple career paths

Although Rithvika ultimately chose medicine, what she valued most about Waterloo's Health Sciences program was its flexibility.

For much of her undergraduate degree, she seriously considered both medicine and law, even applying to both fields at the same time.

The program allowed her to remain competitive while exploring multiple interests and career options.

"Health Sciences encouraged students to pursue medicine without ever pigeonholing us into a single career path," she says.

This flexibility exposed students to the many careers that exist within healthcare beyond becoming a physician, including health informatics, health policy, research, government, and healthcare leadership.

The strong co-op program also helped students gain practical experience and build competitive resumes for a variety of professions.

Why students should consider Waterloo Health Sciences

For students considering medicine, Rithvika believes Waterloo Health Sciences offers something unique: a combination of strong academics, real-world experience, flexibility, and a supportive learning environment.

Unlike programs that focus narrowly on preparing students for one outcome, Waterloo encourages exploration and helps students discover the path that best aligns with their interests and strengths.

"I deeply appreciated that diversity of outcomes," she says.

The result is a program that prepares students not only to become competitive applicants for medical school, but also to become adaptable leaders, problem-solvers, and healthcare professionals.

Rithvika's journey from Waterloo Health Sciences to medical school and residency demonstrates that success in healthcare isn't just about following a prescribed path.

It's about gaining experiences, building perspective, and finding the direction that is right for you.

For students wondering whether Health Sciences can prepare them for medicine, her answer is clear: it gave her the academic foundation, practical experience, flexibility, and confidence to take the next step in her journey to becoming a physician.
