Congratulations to Lisa Hallman (Honours Political Science, Arts & Business - HRM Specialization), winner of a $500 HR Professional of Tomorrow Scholarship from Human Resources Research Institute (HRRI), sponsored by TD Insurance!

Out of close to 300 applicants, Lisa and 19 other recipients were awarded this prize on the strength of their academic standing, their volunteer work, and their applications.

Lisa also receives a complimentary one-year HRPA student membership.

The uWaterloo Sustainability Project (UWSP) is hiring for a Human Resources Co-Director for Winter 2012. Please see UWSP HR director posting (PDF) for more details about this exciting position!

UWSP is a student run FedS service at the University of Waterloo that provides a vast amount of environmental services to the University of Waterloo and Waterloo Region. The vision of the group is working towards environmental, social, and economic sustainability in the University of Waterloo and the surrounding community. Our primary activities involve education, advocacy, and hands on activities that help bring about positive behavioural and social changes in our community. Our organization provides volunteer opportunities to over 200 students every term, with a vast amount of projects such as workshops, rallies, social events, performances, fundraisers, to building solar panels and sustainable technology and providing environmental consulting services to students and various organizations at the University of Waterloo and Waterloo Region.

I have been the Human Resources Director for UWSP this past term and was able to meet new friends on campus and get hands-on HR experience! This position helped me to find an HR co-op position for the upcoming term and it could also help anyone in pursuing a career in Human Resource Management. I will also be available to assist the HR Co-Director throughout the term and make sure you have enough support.

Note that memberships paid between Sept 1 and Dec 1 will be entered to win one 2012 HRPA Conference pass. I'll forward memberships and cheques to Carla on Nov 29 so you're eligible for the draw. I also have extra applications in my office.

Carla Calderon, our HRPA representative (and a uWaterloo grad!) will provide information and answer questions about the CHRP designation and HRPA. Meet some of our HRM course instructors. I will also be available to answer any questions about the HRM program at Waterloo.

To be eligible for an HR Professionals of Tomorrow Scholarship, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a resident of Ontario
  • Enrolled in your graduating year of high school, entering or currently enrolled in the 1st year of a 2-year diploma program, the 2nd year of a 3-year diploma or degree program, or the 3rd year of a 4-year degree program
  • Post-secondary students must be enrolled in a college or university in Ontario in a human resources related program (e.g. organizational development, business with a HR focus, etc.)
  • Have a minimum 'B' average in your last completed year of study
  • Demonstrate involvement in extracurricular activities, including volunteer work
  • Be legally eligible to work in Canada upon graduation

Applications for Psych 467 W2012 (HR Apprenticeship) are now being accepted. Please see the 'Course Information' page of the Psychology Undergraduate for course information and the application form.
The application deadline for Winter 2012 is Friday August 26, 2011

For Winter 2012 we are inviting applications from HRM students who are not Psychology Majors (and therefore have not taken Psych 291, 292, 391) but who have a strong interest in a Human Resources placement. Applications will be reviewed on an individual basis and priority will be given to Psychology Majors. Spaces for non-Psych Majors will be limited depending on demand and the ability to secure additional HR placements.

Fall 2011 Enrolment Appointments

Be sure to check Quest for the date and time of your Fall 2011 enrolment appointment. Appointments are next week: June 6-11, 2011. You are strongly advised to take advantage of your enrolment appointment as many courses are full by the time open enrolment begins (July 25 for Fall 2011).

HRM Course Offerings – 2011/2012

HRM course offerings for Fall 2011, Winter 2012, Spring 2012, as well as HRM courses offered by other departments, are available on the HRM website.

Note that HRM 303 (Compensation), 305 (Health and Safety), and 307 (Labour Relations) can be used as electives towards the HRM plans.
The dates/times for Winter 2012 courses are not yet confirmed.

The Centre for Career Development is looking for students to fill the position of Student Career Leader. In this volunteer position you will gain valuable job search and career-related skills by helping fellow students with their resumes, cover letters, and general job search. Open to third- and fourth-year regular and co-op students who possess strong interpersonal, leadership, and communication skills.

HRM 305 (Health and Safety) and HRM 307 (Labour Relations) received approval in January 2011 by HRPA toward the CHRP designation.

Waterloo offers the nine courses required for the CHRP designation and all courses have now received full HRPA approval!

Grand Valley HRPA Annual Award
The 2011 Grand Valley Human Resources Professional Annual Award information is now available.
An award, valued at $1,000 (or $2,000 for an HRPA member), is awarded annually to an undergraduate student at the University of Waterloo (UW) who has demonstrated academic excellence and a commitment to the Human Resources profession.
Full details about the award, eligibility, application information, and deadlines are on the HRM website.

HRM 305 and 307 – Pending CHRP Approval
Note that HRM 305 (Health and Safety) and HRM 307 (Labour Relations) have both been submitted to HRPA for approval toward the CHRP designation. The committee next meets on Jan 21 and we will send out an announcement as soon as we receive the committee’s decision.

Note that Fall 2011 pre-enrolment is Feb 28 through March 6. You are strongly advised to take advantage of the pre-enrolment window.
