Computer science at Waterloo ranked number one nationally for third year in a row by Maclean’s

The Cheriton School of Computer Science has been ranked number one nationally for the third year in a row, according to the Maclean’s 2023 university rankings just released. Based on program and research reputation, computer science at Waterloo shared the podium for first place with CS programs at the University of British Columbia and University of Toronto.

The task of Grammar Error Correction (GEC) entails designing a system that is capable of performing text improvement and correcting semantic/syntax inconsistencies in a text span (sentence), while grammar error detection (GED) is used to classify whether a sentence is correct or not.

Distinguished Professor Emeritus Don Cowan receives J.W. Graham Medal in Innovation and Computing

On Saturday, October 1, 2022, Distinguished Professor Emeritus Don Cowan (MSc ’61, PhD ’65) received an honorary J.W. Graham Medal in Innovation and Computing at the Wes Graham Symposium.

The award recognizes Professor Cowan’s “extensive academic career, pioneering research in mathematics and computer science, entrepreneurial spirit, and devotion to mentorship and knowledge sharing.”

The 21st ACM SIGGRAPH / Eurographics Symposium on Computer Animation took place virtually and in person this year at Durham University in the United Kingdom from September 13 to 15.
