Professor Eleanor Chin-Hwa Chu (1950–2017)
It is with deep sorrow that we inform you of the death of Eleanor Chin-Hwa Chu. Eleanor passed away on February 28, 2017 after a brief but courageous battle with cancer.

Eleanor was born in Taipei, Taiwan and earned her first degree in Agricultural Chemistry from National Taiwan University in 1973. She came to Canada in 1977 to pursue studies in Physics and Mathematics at Acadia University (BSc, 1980; MSc 1981) and further graduate studies in Computer Science at the University of Waterloo (MMath, 1984; PhD, 1988), the latter degree under the supervision of Dr. Alan George.

Her research and academic career began at the University of Waterloo. She subsequently joined the University of Guelph in 1991 and was promoted to full professor in 2001.

The Dr. Eleanor Chu Scholarship will be established and permanently endowed for full-time undergraduate students in physics or mathematics at Acadia University, Eleanor’s first Canadian alma mater. Messages of condolence are welcome at www.georgefuneralhome.com.

Eleanor is survived by her husband and soulmate, Dr. Robert Hiscott, retired professor, Department of Sociology, University of Waterloo.
