Han Zhao, a former master's student with the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science has been named the recipient of the 2015 Alumni Gold Medal for outstanding achievement at the master's level for his thesis "On the Relationship between Sum-Product Networks and Bayesian Networks", with supervisor Pascal Poupart. Zhao's research interests focus on machine learning especially in inference for probabilistic graphical models. He completed his master's in May 2015 and will be presented with the award during convocation in October.

Dr. Omid Ardakanian, a now postdoctoral researcher and a member of AMPLab at UC Berkeley is a recipient of 2015 Outstanding Achievement in Graduate Studies award for his thesis "On the Control of Active End-nodes in the Smart Grid", with supervisors Srinivasan Keshav and Catherine Rosenberg (ECE). Ardakanian's research interests lie at the intersection of computer networks and power systems.
