Han
Zhao,
a
former
master's
student
with
the
David
R.
Cheriton
School
of
Computer
Science
has
been
named the
recipient
of
the
2015
Alumni
Gold
Medal
for
outstanding
achievement
at
the
master's
level
for
his
thesis
"On
the
Relationship
between
Sum-Product
Networks
and
Bayesian
Networks",
with
supervisor
Pascal
Poupart.
Zhao's
research
interests
focus
on
machine
learning especially
in
inference
for
probabilistic
graphical
models.
He
completed
his
master's
in
May
2015
and
will
be
presented
with
the
award
during
convocation
in
October.
Dr.
Omid
Ardakanian,
a
now
postdoctoral researcher
and
a
member
of AMPLab at
UC
Berkeley is
a
recipient
of
2015
Outstanding
Achievement
in
Graduate
Studies
award
for
his
thesis
"On
the
Control
of
Active
End-nodes
in
the
Smart
Grid",
with
supervisors
Srinivasan
Keshav
and
Catherine
Rosenberg
(ECE).
Ardakanian's
research interests
lie
at
the
intersection
of
computer
networks and power
systems.
