Why did you choose Waterloo?

Coming from Pakistan, I was looking for a school that didn’t just offer degrees but also real-world experience. Waterloo’s co-op program and its reputation for entrepreneurship really stood out. I wanted to build things, not just study them — and this felt like the right place to do that. Waterloo is a place where ambition meets opportunity. Whether you want to land a top job, build a startup, or explore new ideas — Waterloo has the space, the tools, and the people to help you make it happen.

What's your favourite experience so far?

Starting my own startup while still a student. I co-founded a tech company with a close friend I met back in Pakistan—now we’re building it here, thanks to the resources and mentors at Velocity and Conrad. It’s surreal and exciting to turn ideas into reality like this.

Why recommend Waterloo to students from Pakistan?

Because you’ll feel seen and supported here. From events with the Pakistani Students Assocation to late-night study sessions with people who feel like home, there’s a real sense of community. Plus, you’re not limited to just lectures—you can explore business, research, tech, anything.

Do you have advice for students from Pakistan considering Waterloo?

Find your people early. Get involved, ask questions, and don’t be afraid to step outside your comfort zone. And yes—prepare for the cold. Snow is magical... until it's -20°C.

Finding your community

"With all the Iftars, post-Taraweeh runs, and the general excitement and welcoming attitudes around campus, Ramadan at Waterloo always feels special. Everyone’s eagerness to connect and share in the joy of the month creates an environment that fosters deep friendships," says Iman, a Waterloo student.

She adds that "every year, I walk away having met so many new people and creating lifelong friendships. Whether it's chatting during Iftar or bonding in between prayers, there’s something about the energy of Ramadan here that makes you feel part of a community that lasts well beyond the month."

Why did you choose Waterloo?

I chose Waterloo because of its unmatched co-op program and the unique Sustainability and Financial Management (SFM) degree. Waterloo’s co-op allows me to gain hands-on experience, build industry connections, and graduate with a strong professional foundation. The SFM program is the only one of its kind in Canada, blending sustainability, finance, and accounting to prepare students for the future of business.

What's your Waterloo favourite experience so far?

My favourite memory is joining the Pakistani Students’ Association (PSA) and being part of a dholki event. It was amazing to celebrate my culture with music, dance, and vibrant energy right on campus. I met so many new people, felt a strong sense of community, and it truly made campus feel like home. Being involved in PSA has helped me stay connected to my roots while building lifelong friendships.

What advice would you have for students considering Waterloo?

I encourage people to be open, proactive, and take full advantage of the opportunities here. Don’t hesitate to join cultural clubs like the Pakistani Students’ Association — they help you feel at home and build friendships fast. Make the most of Waterloo’s co-op program; it’s a game-changer for your career. Be ready to step out of your comfort zone, ask for help when you need it, and stay organized. Waterloo can be challenging, but with the right mindset and support, it’s a place where you’ll truly grow.
