Please note that this group will not run during the winter 2023 term. Please check back in the spring for the next group offering.

Address problematic substance use by learning how substances can negatively impact your life. This virtual group will invite students from the University of Waterloo and Wilfrid Laurier University to help you better understand your relationship with substances and gain the skills for safer use. You will learn and discuss the unit topic, listen to others, and practice skills between each session.

Facilitators: Brenda Julian, University of Waterloo and Julie Gamble, Wilfrid Laurier University

Expectations

  • You will not be required to share your thoughts or abstain from using substances during the five weeks. However, you must maintain confidentiality and show respect to other group members.
  • You will agree not to use substances or be intoxicated during the group sessions.
  • You must be open to change and to building awareness of the potential harms of your past and current substance use.

Important notes:

  • Group Therapy is an intensive experience that takes time to process and complete the weekly exercises; because of this, we ask that you register for only one therapy group per term. If you are interested in participating in the same group for a second time, please contact Counselling Services before registering.
  • Our Group Therapy is intended for a student audience.
  • By registering for a group, you agree to have your information added to the Campus Wellness’ Electronic Health Record.
  • Registration will close one week before the first group session. If you would like to inquire if there is still group availability, please email Campus Wellness.
  • Please complete the end-of-group survey when the group is over to help improve the services we provide. This data has helped in past to adjust content to meet the student population's needs. We take student feedback very seriously.
