Computer clusters power everything from Google and Facebook to online retail and banking. They’re comprised of hundreds or even thousands of machines connected together by networks, typically in a vast data centre. 

Cheriton School of Computer Science Professor Shai Ben-David, his former PhD student Hassan Ashtiani, now an Assistant Professor at McMaster University, along with colleagues Christopher Liaw, Abbas Mehrabian and Yaniv Plan, have received a best paper award at NeurIPS 2018, the 32^ndAnnual Conference on Neural Information Processing Systems.

Anyone who’s used a pen with a tablet appreciates how precisely the instrument allows them to write, draw, and manipulate objects. A pen is natural input device, one that’s much more nuanced than a mouse or touchpad. Despite its precision and ease of use, many tablet applications still need menus, buttons, and widgets for a user to switch between tools, to set their attributes, and to issue commands.

Four teams of programmers from the University of Waterloo swept the top spots at an Association for Computing Machinery regional International Collegiate Programming Competition over the weekend. 

Studying how human activities and naturally occurring phenomena have an impact on the environment is critical for effective management. Environmental monitoring and modelling are two fundamental practices to help in understanding, predicting and effectively managing these activities and impacts.

Amir-Hossein Karimi had already worked as a software engineer at Facebook, BlackBerry and even founded a startup when he realized he wanted to go back to school.

Professors Olga Veksler and Yuri Boykov joined the David R. Cheriton School of Computer Science earlier this year. Previously, both were full professors in the Department of Computer Science at Western University, where they were faculty members for 14 years.

Computer science doctoral student Mike Schaekermann, Dr. Joslin Goh and Schaekermann’s cosupervisors, Professors Kate Larson and Edith Law, have received a best paper award at CSCW 18, the 21^stACM Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work and Social Computing.
