Critical design and speculative design are two related approaches that aim to prompt reflection and discussion, for example, by subverting expectations about how a technology is used. I provide an overview of common terminology and concepts for critical and speculative design, and compare with related approaches such as design fiction and discursive design. I propose recommendations for using critical and speculative design in HCI (Human-Computer Interaction) research, informed by examples of how these design approaches have been employed in past HCI work.
