Kin Huat Low, School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering
Nanyang Technological University

Unmanned aerial vehicles (or known as drones) are becoming popular for servicing, inspection, surveillance, and commercial activities in recent years. Such activities, however, are hindered by some challenges that are inherent in urban flight operations.

In this talk, we will first present the current and future trends for the traffic management of unmanned aircraft systems, especially for drone operations in urban environments. We next discuss these challenges faced by future urban UAV designers and operators. To provide practical solutions to some of these challenges, current R&D efforts for safe urban drone operations, conducted by the research team in the NTU’s ATMRI in Singapore, will be introduced. Future works and discussions will be covered at the end of the talk.

This presentation has been organized by the IEEE COMSOC Chapter of the Kitchener-Waterloo Section.

Biography: Dr. Kin Huat Low is currently a Professor with the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering, Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore. Dr. Low obtained his BSc degree from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, his MSc and Ph.D. degrees in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Waterloo, Canada.

Dr. Low is an author or co-author of about 400 journal and conference papers in the areas of robotics, structural dynamics and vibrations, unmanned aerial vehicles, air traffic management and urban air mobility. He has been nominated as one of the top 2% scientists in the world, according to a global list recently released by Stanford University. Dr. Low is in charge of the UAS Programme in the NTU’s Air Traffic Management Research Institute (ATMRI). Kin Huat is also an Honorary Member of the Global UTM Association (GUTMA). Dr. Low has been an associate editor in numerous journals in robotics, mechanisms, and mechatronics. He has, in the last two years, been invited to serve as a guest editor of two special issues on Urban Air Mobility (UAM).
