Healthcare is a complex field that involves many different stakeholders, such as patients, doctors, hospitals and clinics, insurance companies, among others. In addition, the field operates on overwhelming amounts of patient data. Therefore, considerations on privacy, security, collaboration, data sharing, traceability and transparency are essential for the enhancement of healthcare services. Many industry experts believe that blockchain technologies can help in improving or solving these issues, and solutions are already at concept, trial or product stage. In 2018, the blockchain-healthcare industry’s worth is estimated to be 175 million dollars, and this number is expected to grow to 5.6 billion dollars by 2025.
This presentation will explore the major potential use cases of blockchain in the area of healthcare and industry solutions already in development, including Electronic Health Records; Drug and Food Supply Chain Tracking; Health Insurance Management; Genomic Data; among others. It will also discuss the importance of Consent Management and the benefits of blockchain for this scenario. During the presentation, related issues about the use cases will also be mentioned, such as healthcare regulations in different areas.
Bio: Pedro is a PhD student in Public Health and Health Systems at the University of Waterloo. He is a mobile app developer, with experiences with Android and iOS. He has a Bachelor’ degree in Industrial Engineering and a Master’s degree in Software Engineering from Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC Rio), in Brazil. His research is in using wearable and sensor technology to create mHealth applications, and his other interests include applying blockchain and related technologies for healthcare.
